It's very, VERY lovely. Jul 09, 2010 Kind of some history to go with why I bought this product. It's pertinent, I promise.
I'm a 22 year old who has just been diagnosed with systemic lupus--which means I'm particularly sensitive to sunlight (sunscreen isn't enough), or as I like to joke, I've got all the un-cool features of vampirism.
The night I was diagnosed, I was discussing with my (awesome) older sister the lifestyle changes this would bring, particularly the sunlight part... Her response was hilarious (and really brought a sense of levity to just being diagnosed with an incurable disease): "Dude... you know what you should get?? A [flippin'] parasol."
So finding a parasol that would protect me from the sun and not make me gag with too much frilliness became my mission. I finally settled on this product (the beige version), for various reasons:
One, it doesn't look like an umbrella, it looks like a parasol. I really like the style, and while I am aware that wearing long sleeves and toting around a parasol will make me look like an "old lady" (that is a quote) to other people my age, I'm quite happy with my peculiar quirkiness.
Two, it's elegant without being over the top. I refused to buy a black or dark colored one, because I'm not into lolita fashion, and because black absorbs sunlight. Anyways, I also didn't want beaded fringe--or ruffles, heaven forbid!
I will tell you though, the pictures do not do it justice. It's very beautiful.
Features, because the description doesn't tell you all that much:
While it's lace, it's got a layer of thin (possibly polyester?) fabric on the underside in the middle, which covers the center of parasol. The edge with just the lace is 4 1/2" when open. It's apparently dyed to match, so this protection (good for me) blends in nicely. It's also cut to fit the lace so it really does blend in.
It's got a hook. If you're like me, you carry around way too much stuff to be constantly juggling a parasol. I can just hook the end over my wrist and carry it like that, and it makes my day much more convenient.
The handle is made of bamboo, as they said, and as far as I know, it looks to be good quality, and will hold up. While they said that the frame is metal (I don't know what kind... it's a silver color?), the metal is attached to a thick clear plastic (the part you use to push the umbrella open). I'm not sure how that will hold up, but it doesn't look flimsy! I just can't go around whacking my friend's shins with it.
Lastly, it's got a cover, for when you're not using it. I think it's some kind of silk and polyester blend (it's softer and shinier than the underside I mentioned), gathers at the top securely, and fits very well.
So, I hope this review helped you, despite my lack of knowledge regarding the materials. I don't review very often, but this product is just really that good, and while it may just be an accessory for you, it will definitely be useful for me. Thanks for reading!
